"Spaceballs: the Animated Saga" on G4TV
Hey all,
Well, notice my excitement when I saw this was on this past Sunday, and DVR'ed the 4 episodes they aired. And honestly...I'm a bit disappointed, really. First off, they weren't able to get all of the original cast (I mean hell...it's not like Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman are THAT busy). Secondly, I don't know what it is, but I really think that Mel Brooks has REALLY LOST his comic touch, ever since the post-"Robin Hood: Men in Tights" days (his downward spiral started with "Dracula: Dead and Lovin' It").
Let's review what I've seen so far:
1) "Revenge of the Sithee" - Well, the Spaceballs take on "Star Wars: Episode I" was an interesting take, as we have President Skroob with a new Droid Casino, and Dark Helmet ogling over Skroob's new create a stripper booth. After getting KO'ed, we go back into the past where we see little Pammikin Crybaby (Dark Helmet) designing a new K-cup bra. Meanwhile, Pres. Skroob owns Pami and his mom, and sold Pami to Outlet Mall (a parody of Darth Maul). After selling Yogurt the K-cup bra for his wife, Mall arrives, and Pami basically bets on himself in a pod-race. It was a decent way to show the past for Helmet and how he got it (and why he doesn't take the thing off), but only some of the parts of the episode were funny.
2) "Lord of the Onion Ring" - Hooo boy, take a mystical onion ring (complete with 70s-style flashback of Lonestarr's dad stealing said Onion Ring), have Barf stumble upon it, and Yogurt sending them (and Princess Vespa, which Daphne Zuniga reprises) on a quest to get rid of it. So, Pres. Skroob orders Helmet after them with a Dark Army. Well...Helmet screws up and creates a Dork Army. *shakes head* Once again, funny in places, but not as a whole.
3) "Grand Theft Starship" - Well, Lonestarr forgets to save Vespa from a lava monster, because he's too busy playing the "Grand Theft Starship" video game. Vespa finally gets to his place, and is NOT too happy (because Lonestarr is stuck on the final boss). Inadvertently, they get sucked into the game....all the while Skroob and Helmet actually go to Phase 2 of a world-domination plan, and pretty much took over things (oddly surprised that Lonestarr hasn't come along and kicked their asses by then). So, bored...they go to find where the hell Lonestarr vanished to, and discover he's in the GTS game. So, they go into the game world to try to finish things. After finding out about his boss and Vespa being stuck inside the game, Barf goes to Yogurt for help, and some Matrix-style parody ensues to log Barf in to save the day. Definitely some good humor here, as you can recognize parodies of a LOT of video game characters here.
4) "Watch Your Assic Park" - Lonestarr & Co. wins VIP passes to the Spankies' facility, Lonestarr's favorite baseball team, which Skroob owns. So, Skroob using pseudoscience (steroids and dinosaur DNA) spikes his Spankies players, and uses Watch Your Assic Park to dominate the athletic universe. So, Skroob sets a trap, sending Lonestarr & Co. w/Skroob's niece, two lawyers on a tour (where they'll never return from). Once again, few laughs, most fall short.
-Well, veteran voice actors Rino Romano (Bruce Wayne/Batman in "The Batman," and Spider-Man in the recent video games/cartoons) takes over for Pullman's Lonestarr, and Dee Bradley Baker (???) takes over for Moranis as Dark Helmet. Meh, on both of those decisions.
After watching these 4 eps, I'm tempted to pass on the rest, as these weren't very funny.
